My point is we have seen this all before. The European community, the USA (and us Canadians as the lap dogs of US policy) jump in and help regimes that in the end turn around and bite us in the ass. Men and women in Afghanistan are being shot at, and blown up, most of the time with weapons supplied to them by us 30 years ago to fight off the Russians. We fought Saddam yet he was placed, cherry picked by us to lead Iraq. Are we doing the same thing again?
Do we know who it is we are supporting in Libya? The media feed is "the free people of Libya" but is there even a kernel of truth to the claim of Mohamar and his son that El Quida (sp) are in some way connected to this revolt? Are we there to stop unrest from spreading to other oil rich nations like Yemen (where tanks dueled each other today)? Let's face it, if it were not a nation that provides necessary oil (even though it is only 2% of the total world production) would we care?
No I think what we are seeing is the groundwork of the UN (forced by the European and North American nations) to impose some sort of military "help" in any of the upcoming embattled nations. Fact is if the Saudi nation, and Yemen, as well as some of the others like Kuwait, have massive unrest, then oil prices will soon double or even triple. If that happened, and be in no doubt that the first thing any of those regimes will do is cut off oil supply, then the US, Canada, Europe and even countries like Russia and China will be de-stabilized. Remember nearly everything you buy comes into the store via a truck. A truck that burns petrol based fuel. If the prices remained high for a year, home heating oil, electricity, even production of many things we take for granted will grind to a halt. People will be unable to get to work, and industries will be unable to afford to produce. Food production will be hit hard. It will be "Peak Oil" forced upon us by events rather than the natural (and inevitable "Peak Oil" situation). That is where demand for oil is far higher than supply. Cuba has gone through this, and it was a very tough time for them.
How far are our UN supported countries really ready to go? What is the real rational behind this? A lot of questions are NOT being asked, at least not publicly. We are getting spoon fed by the media that we are helping local people. Is that true or are we once again meddling, to try and buy more time? A lot of room for head scratching and deep thinking.
